Suspended an installation artwork by Arabella Dorman

As the UK news stays firmly fixed on Brexit negotiations, it’s easy to overlook the plight of thousands of refugees who – after risking their lives to make it to Europe – remain in limbo.

Artist Arabella Dorman’s installation seeks to highlight the conditions of those washed up and unwanted in Europe who remain locked up in detention centres across the continent.

Suspended is formed of hundreds of items of clothing discarded by migrants upon the Greek island of Lesbos, a renowned disembarkation point for those arriving illegally in Europe.

The piece hangs above visitors’ heads and represents the fragmentation in the lives of those who’ve come seeking a better life. It’s lit from the inside casting eerie and beautiful shadows across the church to represent the struggles of those seeking a better life.

Now – Feb 2018, 8am – 6pm: Suspended by Arabella Dorman

All the clothes used in this installation have been collected from the beaches and roadsides of Lesvos, by volunteers working with The Starfish Foundation, a grassroots group formed in response to the growing need for co-ordinated refugee support in Lesvos.
