It’s fair to say that London is beginning to get rather chilly, but it’s nothing compared to how cold the capital used to be.
Between 1605 and 1814 the Thames froze 24 times and when that happened out came the Frost Fairs held on the river. The Bankside Frost Fair is a recreation of what that might’ve been like. Albeit, unlike 500 years ago, none of the planned activities will be taking place on the river itself!
The reimagining will include a life-size elephant parade. Why elephants? It’s a reference to the time an elephant walked across the Thames at Blackfriar’s Bridge.
There’ll also be a Dr Who screening of the episode, Thin Ice, which features London’s last Frost Fair in 1814.
Along with FREE historic Frost Fair tours, there’ll be live music, an artisan market and a collection of paid-for craft workshops inside a purpose built studio plus – our favourite – FREE horse and carriage rides. You’ll need to book for some of these so get on it,
A perfect weekend for you and a date or you and the kids.
