Hackney Carnival

Autumn is almost upon us but not to worry. Don a light jacket and kick through the red-brown leaves to some fun this weekend. Here’s our personal faves.

There’s a banging FREE weekend of live music, kids’ activities, street food and booze. And a whopping great all singing, all dancing procession; it’s Hackney Carnival.

The great mass of dancing bodies – upwards of 1,000 performers in all – will be snaking its way from Mare Street via Hackney Town Hall on its journey. If you need a break you can watch some tunes on one of the seven sound systems dotted around nearby. There’ll be three kids’ areas and 30 stalls selling goodies.

Sun 8th Sept, 11am – 7pm: Hackney Carnival

Heads up, 20-somethings; there’s a day celebrating all things millennial coming to the capital this weekend. .

The theme for this year’s MILLENIFEST at Vinegar Yard is Talent so watch out for a programme of inspirational talks, fascinating Q & As and interactive workshops.

Speakers include Sian Berry, Co-leader of the Green, Emma Moseley, Feminist activist and Instagrammer and Jamie Rawsthorne, Entrepreneur and Co-creator of The Zac and Jay Show.

Best of all there’s FREE tickets of those under 30 who fancy popping in. (Normal price; £20.) Just log on to their website pronto.

Get down to a waterborne weekend of fun at the fab – and FREE – Classic Boat Festival at St Katherine’s Docks.

There’ll be more than 40 vintage sailing and motor boats to eye-up and explore at the east London gala. Visitors have also got permission to clamber aboard a number of vessels including some legendary Dunkirk little ships.

There’ll be a chance to do a taster stand up paddleboard session and try a water bike, Look out for an adult craft workshop plus a treasure hunt for little ones where kids’ll have to track down the hidden signal flags to win a prize. Ahoy there!

Make straight for an afternoon of live music, craft beers and fun for the kids at the FREE Bermondsey Folk Festival.

Sunday’s show will feature performances of Irish dance and traditional tunes. The day kicks off with a fascinating history walk at 11am.
